Lesson 11 - The Internet
What is the internet?
What is a protocol?
What is DNS?
The internet by definition is "The Internet is the world’s largest wide area
network (WAN)." A WAN is a Wide Area Network. This basically means it is a simple way of sending information across the world and communicate. Using the internet you can send messages to people from anywhere else that has internet. Lastly it has a lot of information that you can use for research or curiosity.
What is a protocol?
Protocols control or enable the connection, communication,
and data transfer between two computing endpoints. The first protocol was made in 1969 and it was on the ARPANET. The system was being used for email. Also, in the late 1900's there was 200+ computers connected to it. There was a new set of protocols called TCP/IP that became the
standard that networks used. They used this to exchange data.
What is DNS?
The DNS is the Domain Name Service. There would be no internet communication without DNS. The DNS resolves or translates IP addresses so we can communicate online. Applications send a request which is called a DNS lookup to the computers DNS server. The servers only have limited number of information about it. It is compared to a phone book.
Explain what an ISP is and what it does?
ISP is Internet Service Provider. It connects through routers that connect to LANs and WANs on the Internet. As the data travels through routers it hops. It does this so it can get where it needs to go. Traceroute is a tool you can use to show how data is routed through the internet.
What is a PING and Firewall?
A ping is another computer that is used to determine whether there is a connection to it. It send test packets over the internet you are connected to. Then it tests if the computer they sent it to receives it.Pinging a computer can show you if you are connected to the machine and if it is working. A Firewall is a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. A firewall can be software or hardware based.
Connect To The Internet Summary
The internet is made up of little networks that are all collected together. The smallest networks are the networks that are individual internet users. These are usually set up at homes. The small networks get connected to larger networks. Backbones and routers handle data at very high levels. Backbones are larger and have bundles of fiber-optic cables. Routers are responsible for moving data to other networks or parts of networks.
Internet Service Provider is ISP. It is what helps individuals and companies connect to the Internet. When you sign with an ISP you should be given and email address. They also allow customers to choose what type of service that best goes with what they need. Connections can be made with a copper wire in telephone lines TV. These wires that are fiber-optic lines,
To connect you computer to the internet there are many ways. You can plug you computer into a modem and just turn the modem on and it will work. You can also you wireless internet connect so basically a modem without a plug. DSL connect which are used on phone lines. DSL are always on and will work "24/7".

Lesson 8: Making presentations
3 Goals of a presentations:
3 types of learners:
- Inform- telling people about something about a topic
- Persuade- trying to convince somebody to do something
- Education- showing instructions for people to do
3 types of learners:
- Visual learners- Focus on the slides and pictures
- Listening learners- Focus on the speaker is saying
- Physical learners- Will learn with participation
4 Things that make up a presentation:
- Text: words on the slide
- Charts and graphs: visual data as an idea
- Graphics and photos: visual representation of the speaker is talking about
- Audio and Video: so you can hear and watch to connect the information
The rules of a good presentation:
- slides should be simple
- state your purpose
- add images
- relax and use a friendly speaking style
- do just read off the slide
Text
- Dark background light text
- light background dark text
- Large font size not too BIG not too small
Organization
- make purpose clean
- present subject in multiple ways
- end with summary
- Avoid cluttering photos
- don't mix clip-art and photos
- don't use too many colors
Talking
- Don't talk too fast
- Don't read your slides word for word
- Do practice
- Add info and examples
- Answer questions
The best presentation
- easy to read slides
- a clearly stated purpose
- graphics, and photos
- a speaker who is relaxed and confident

POIT Lesson 6 Peripherals notes
- Peripherals: Devices that provide the computer with input or output
- mouse input-optical or laser mouse
- Keyboard-input device that simply sends a symbol of what to do sends info
- monitor output-CRT or CRT TV tube screens it can be a input if it is a touch screen
- printer output-high capacity or normal
- flash drive input-storage device
- pixel is a small colored dot (squared) that is displayed on a screen
- scanner-reads the document and sends it to the computer and it copies it takes a picture
- multi function printer-does many things, copies, prints, faxes mostly used at home office or small workplace
- Cd drive put a CD in it and it
- Blu ray can read multiple things
- External devices-things that holds info as storage for you
- SSD- like a flash drive hard to lose no moving parts
- Tower cases-different types and sizes of drives
- keyboard, mouse, joystick are some things that you can attach to a computer

First 9 weeks
What is your impression of the first 9-weeks of high school?
It is a lot of funny, but very scary the first few days but I made friends instantly because on AOIT and I already had a few friends because of marching band.
What has been difficult about the transition from middle school?
Not knowing anybody to sit with and lunch and in class. Also I didn't know where to go I still don't know where to go sometimes. I only knew where to go because I had one of my sophomore friends from bad take me to my classes the first week
What has been easy about the transition?
It has been easy because I have made a lot of friends from marching band and AOIT.
What have you learned about yourself?
That I'm better at making friends then i thought because i have a billion new friends. I say this because I thought I would have no friends because all of my friends went to friendship, But I have made some of my best friends because of AOIT and marching band.
